Los frutos cítricos son los cultivos subtropicales más comunes en el mundo; existe una gran cantidad de variación entre las especies y cultivos de cítricos. Citrus sinensis (L. Osbeck) o naranja dulce pertenece a la familia Rutaceae, es una de las especies de este género cultivado ampliamente, siendo esta variedad la principal fruta producida a nivel mundial. Anualmente se producen más de 80 millones de toneladas de C. sinensis, países como China, Brasil, la Unión Europea, México y Estados Unidos son los principales productores. C. sinensis se consume en todo el mundo, el consumo anual de naranja por habitante en México es de 36.9 kg. Las principales partes de este fruto utilizadas por su potencial terapéutico son la pulpa, semillas, hojas y cáscara. Esta fruta es rica en fitoquímicos como aceites esenciales, flavonoides, cumarinas, vitaminas y minerales, además son los responsables de una diversa actividad biológica antiinflamatoria, antimicrobiana, antibiopelícula, anticariogénica, antiparasitaria, antifúngica y antioxidante.
