Citrus fruits are the most common subtropical crops in the world; there is a great deal of variation among citrus species and cultivars. Citrus sinensis (L. Osbeck), or sweet orange, belongs to the Rutaceae family and is one of the most widely cultivated species in this genus, with this variety being the main fruit produced globally. More than 80 million tons of C. sinensis are produced annually, with countries such as China, Brazil, the European Union, Mexico, and the United States being the main producers. C. sinensis is consumed worldwide; the annual per capita consumption of oranges in Mexico is 36.9 kg. The main parts of this fruit used for their therapeutic potential are the pulp, seeds, leaves, and peel. This fruit is rich in phytochemicals such as essential oils, flavonoids, coumarins, vitamins, and minerals, which are responsible for diverse biological activity, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiofilm, anticariogenic, antiparasitic, antifungal, and antioxidant properties.
