The widespread use of antibiotics in livestock production has enabled the control of infections that previously caused severe economic losses, as well as accelerated animal growth. However, these benefits have been accompanied by a global challenge: multidrug resistance (MDR), which now poses a major concern for both livestock production and public health. Within this context, plant extracts have emerged as a promising natural alternative due to their antimicrobial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, which can support animal health without compromising productive performance. The use of plants as bioinputs not only rescues ethnobotanical knowledge but also promotes biotechnological applications aligned with sustainable approaches such as those advocated by the World Health Organization and other international agencies under the One Health framework. Collectively, this evidence indicates that the transition toward natural bioactive ingredients may contribute to more sustainable, resilient, and environmentally sound livestock production systems.
