The lakes located in the Oriental Basin, central Mexico, are a natural laboratory that harbors high biodiversity, especially zooplankton, which is threatened at all levels by the impact of human activities on these bodies of water, as evidenced by the introduction of exotic species, pollution and waste accumulation, global warming, and the overexploitation of resources. Through an interview with a specialist in Conservation Biogeography and a chronicle of a journey into these environments, this essay attempts to envision these lakes as a study model that allows us to explain processes and analyze patterns that occur on larger scales. The afore mentioned are relevant regarding the commonly named “sixth mass extinction” and its impact on biodiversity and humankind in the future.
