The tardigrades popularly called water bears form a phylum of microscopic invertebrates, found in freshwater, marine and terrestrial habitats. Since its discovery, it has been studied for cryptobiosis. This physiological adaptation to the ability to survive in extreme environmental conditions. Globally, the tardigrade taxa amount to a little more than 1,200 species. In Mexico there are 56 records of species, their scarce abundance is due to the little knowledge they have about these spectacular organisms.
