The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted the health and economy of all societies globally. However, within a community, not all of its socio-economic sectors are affected equally. We will analyze how this pandemic was perceived and handled differently by two important sectors of the Mexican population: street vendors and formal workers. In two scientific studies, it was shown that 82.6% of street vendors preferred to be exposed to the disease, in contrast to 18.4% of formal workers. In addition, street vendors were shown to be 7 times less afraid of dying from COVID-19, or up to 16 times less worried about the increase in pandemic infections. It is important to contemplate this type of attitude that determines the behavior of people, which consequently can have a negative impact on the strategies proposed to combat the pandemic. Therefore, possibly the recommendations made in developed countries would not necessarily be effective in underdeveloped countries. That is why analyzing the socioeconomic environment and the needs of each population is important in order to be able to design specific strategies in the face of global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
