Antimicrobial agents are important due they to their use in the treatment against infectious agents. A lot of the known antimicrobial agents and newly discovered new molecules are secondary metabolites of bacterial and fungal microorganisms, as well as various plants. Secondary metabolites are compounds produced by an organism or a plant that are not required for its development, growth or reproduction. These compounds are undergoing investigation with the aim of being used clinically after demonstrating their efficacy and safety. This provides the opportunity to expand the therapeutic options available. However, we have a race against time between the development of new antimicrobial agents and the emergence of drug-resistant microorganisms. In this article, we talk about some of the secondary metabolites used daily as antimicrobial agents and their origin, as well as new molecules under study with potential therapeutic use.
